2 Flashcards
What is ecology?
study of interactions between organism and their environment at biotic and abiotic levels
What are living organisms made of? How do matter and energy differ?
Living organism are made of cell, matter and energy.
- Matter is anything that is solid and takes up space.
- Energy is what binds matter together, breaks matter apart, and what moves matter. All living organisms are made up of matter and energy, along with biotic (living) and abiotic (dead) factors.
How does photosynthesis work?(as discussed oh so very briefly in class). How and where is energy store? How is this energy released?
- Plants get energy from the sun, animals eat plants and we eat the animals which provides us with energy.
- energy is stored in. CH2O +6CO2+ Solar Energy→ chlorophyll= C6H12O6 + 6O2.
- Molecules are bonded by energy when broken down this is when we lose energy. Energy is stored in sugar.
What are trophic levels? How are these characterized?
-Trophic levels are the positions of organisms on a food chain.
1st Trophic level→ primary producers (energy from the sun; plants)
2nd Trophic level→ primary consumers; (snails, goats; herbivores 1st to get energy)
3rd Trophic level–>secondary consumers; (ex. when humans eat the goat)
4th Trophic level→ tertiary consumers; fox
ex. if fox eats the human
-The producer collects energy and stores it, then the primary consumer eats the producer, then the secondary consumer eats the primary consumer, and the tertiary consumer eats the secondary consumer, and so on.
What are biological communities?
Biological communities are all interacting populations of species.
What are species?
Species is organisms that can reproduce fertile offspring.
What are populations?
Populations are all members of a species in a given area at a given time
what are ecosystems?
Ecosystems is a community of biotic and abiotic interacting as system.
What are niches?
Niches are the total set of environmental factors that determine species distribution in an ecosystem. Niches are always changing because the environment is always changing.
What are predation, parasitism, etc? What is competition? What is symbiosis? What are the different kinds of symbiosis?
-Predation is when an animal (or human) kills its prey directly; it benefits one of the creatures and is negative for the other.
-Competition is when two animals (or humans) compete for food, sex, or other resources; it is negative for both of them because they will both end up getting injured when fighting over resources.
- Symbiosis is the intimate living together of two or more species.
-The different types of symbiosis are :
Niche, Commensulism, mutualism
What makes communities stable or unstable?
Diversity and complexity make them stable
