2 Flashcards
Rotational movement
Condyle rotates on the articular disc of the TMJ through the central portion of the condyle aka, the terminal hinge axis. When the TMJ is ONLY rotational, the articular disc is in the most anterior/superior portion of the glenoid fossa or the CR
Hinged movements can occur in different rotational axis (PURE ROTATION
HORIZONAL
SAGGITAL
FRONTAL
Horizontal axis rotation
UNLIKE the other movements, this is a hinged movement of pure rotation through BOTH CONDYLES. Movement is inferior and posterior and occurs either at the start of mnd opening or end of mnd closure (unlike the others, it DOES occur naturally during mnd function)
Sagittal axis rotation
CC or CCW and purely rotational movement through a single condyle (the other condyle moves inferior and medial). This isolated rotation does not occur during the function of the mnd, it is combined with other rotational or translational movements in other planes.
Frontal axis rotation
pure rotation of a single condyle on the vertical axis. Other condyle moved anteriorly and medially. This isolated rotation does not occur during the function of the mnd, it is combined with other rotational or translational movements in other planes.
