2/29/16 Flashcards
Compound
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture.
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout
Heterogeneous mixture
a mixture that composes of components that aren’t uniform or they have localized regions that all have different properties
Solute
a substance dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent
Solvent
A solvent (from the Latin solvō, “I loosen, untie, I solve”) is a substance that dissolves a solute (a chemically different liquid, solid or gas), resulting in a solution
Suspension
a heterogeneous mixture containing solid particles that are sufficiently large for sedimentation
Concentration
the abundance of a constituent divided by the total volume of a mixture
Dilute
(of a liquid) made thinner or weaker by having had water or another solvent added to it.
Saturated
holding as much water or moisture as can be absorbed; thoroughly soaked.
Solubility
a chemical property referring to the ability for a given substance, the solute, to dissolve in a solvent
Substance
a particular kind of matter with uniform properties
