Personification
Human qualities to a non living thing
EX: the sun smiled on our picnic
Symbolism
An image or thing to stand for something else
EX: Lindsay wore black to the funeral
Allusion
A reference to another work such as the Bible or mythology
EX:it rained so much that I thought we’d have to build an ark
Lyric poem
A short poem that is like a song
Ode
A poem that has two or more stanzas with similar structures
Haiku
A very short poem with 17 syllables in 3 lines usually about nature
Sonnet
A poem that has 14lines with 10to 12 syllables per line first eight lines develop one idea last 6 lines question that idea
Balled
A short poem with stanzas of 2 to 4 lines and a refrain that repeats tells a story
Free verse
A poem that dose not follow any rules of rhythm or rhyme
Denotations
Dictionary definitions of words
EX: both hideous, and only mean having an unpleasant appearance
Connotations
Meanings suggested or implied by a word separate from its dictionary definition
Tone
Mood the open creates for the reader
Theme
Central idea that a poem explores
Speaker
It’s like the narrator of the story he or she is the voice of the poem
Point of view
Position or outlook from witch the speaker tells a story or observes something
Poem
A type of writing in which the poet chooses and arranges words to create a strong feeling through meaning, sound, and rhythm.
Lines
Rows of words unlike sentences lines in a poem do not always follow rules of capitalization and punctuation
Stanzas
Groups of lines set apart by spaces
Rhyme
Describes words with the same ending sound
Rhyme scheme
The ending of certain lines rhyme with each other
Meter
A recurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
Alliteration
The repetition of an initial consonant sound
EX: Baby Boy Blue
