Define life expectancy
An indication of how long a person can expect to live it is the number of years of life remaining
Define HALE

Define health adjusted life expectancy (HALE)
A measure of burden of disease based on life expectancy at birth but including an adjustment for time spent in poor health
Mortality
The number of deaths in a population in a given period (usually 12 months)
Mortality rate
The measure of the proportion of the population who die in 1 year period (usually per 100,000)
Infant mortality rate
Measures the rate of deaths of infants before their first birthday, usually expressed per 1000 live births
What does U5MR mean
Under 5 mortality rate
Define U5MR
Measures the number of children that die before there fifth birthday, usually expressed per 1000 live births
Maternal mortality ratio
The number of mothers who die as a result of pregnancy, childbirth or associated treatment per 100,000 live births

Hospital separation
Episodes of hospital care that start with admission and end at transfer discharge or death
Burden of disease
A measure of the impact of diseases and injuries, specifically it measures the gap between current health status and a persons optimal health measured by a unit called “DALY

A measure of burden of disease. One Daly is equal one year of health life lost due to illiness

The sum of the years of life lost due to premature death and the years lived with disability
