What is nationalism?
Supporting your nation.
What is unique about the relationship between nationalism and revolution in america as opposed to all other examples?
Nationalism was the result of the war.
How did the British drive the Americans together?
Their fear of the colonies independence.
What is the difference between the plural and singular interpretations of the term “United States”?
People refer to the United States as one, not plural.
What was the first thing congress thought the new nation needed?
A constitition.
According to the Dickinson Report, who should handle all functions of the central government?
Congress.
What were some of the problems Congress discovered in implementing the Dickinson Report?
Inexperience running a nation.
Why didn’t the public trust the new central government?
British tyranny was the only rule they knew.
Why did congress avoid imposing taxes?
They didn’t want to anger the people farther.
What was the solution Congress came up with to finance the war and themselves?
Bills of Credit (Paper money).
What was the problem with the bills of credit?
People didn’t believe that a piece of paper had value.
When starting to work on the constitution, why were the seperate states more of a problem then a help?
They were becoming to independant.
Who was stronger, the central or local governments?
The local governments because the local governments were becoming solvent.
What was the first constitution called?
The Articles of Confederation.
What were 3 powers given to congress by the AoC?
Naval matters, state disputes, and postal communication.
Why couldn’t congress enforce its vast theoretical power over the states?
Congress was payed by the states.
What was the main topic that stopped the ratification of the AoC?
Territory.
Why was Maryland worried that states like Virginia woulld claim the western lands?
The only border that the western states had was the pacific ocean.
Why would the growing of other states hurt states like Maryland?
Economic advantage.
Why did Virginia ofer to limit its own borders?
They thought an oversized republic would result in tyranny.
What were the conditions Virginia made pending its ratification?
- Land had to be owned by government
- States have to be no more than 150 sq.m, and no less than 100sq.m.
- Any state would be admitted into the union.
Who eventually made Maryland ratify the AoC?
La Luzerne, blackmail.
What gave “The Critical Period” it’s name?
People then thought it was a dark time.
