Has various input and output devices and is designed to fit under or on a table or desk. There are two basic designs today; IBM compatible and Apple/Macintosh. We use IBM Compatible microcomputers at Rhodes state.
Desktop computer
Machine that manipulates data according to a list of instructions
Computer
Typically used and are designed to be portable and light-weight. Generally run on battery power
Laptop or notebook computers
Small and have less storage capacity and are capable of fewer functions. Generally used as digital notebooks and some have internet and voice recognition software
Hands-held computers
A handheld input device that is designed to move about on a pad or table.
Mouse
Marks the location on the screen where the mouse is currently active
Mouse Pointer
Marks the location where characters will appear when typed or deleted when delete button is used
Cursor/Insertion Pointer
Set of keys found at the very top row of the keyboard. Keys are coded F1-F12. Can be used to perform shortcut commands.
Function Keys
Key that allows other keys to perform an additional role. These must be held down to be activated. Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys are example of these.
Modifier Keys
Keys that are Set/Locked into one of two roles. These keys can be turned on and off. Insert, Caps Lock, and Num Lock are examples of these
Toggle Keys
A device used to input a printed page of text or graphics and convert it into data that can be processed by a computer.
Scanner
An output device that converts electrical signals from a computer into images that can be viewed
Monitor/Screen/Display
An output device used to write info on paper. Generally used with ink jet or laser
Printer
Output device used to convert electrical signals into sounds effects, music, or voice
Speakers
A disk storage device that can read and write to a permanent disk
Hard drive
A single removable plastic disk that can store and hold any files
CD OR COMPACT DISC
Removable disk that can store more than a CD can
DVD or DIGITAL VERSATILE DISC
Portable storage disc that can be plugged into USB port
Portable flash stick
Stand alone magnetic disk that is housed in a case and plugs into the computer
External Hard Drive
Provides the electrical currents so that all the parts can communicate;connects all parts together
Motherboard
Contains the heart or the brains of the computer; it performs the arithmetic, logic, and control functions. It interprets all of the instructions we give the computer
CPU or CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
Small chip that keeps the timing of all of the computers operations
System clock
Short term memory of the computer and is considered primary storage; more rams you have the quicker computer will operate
RAM or RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY
Drive that has the ability to playback DVDs or install games on your computer
DVD DRIVE
Drive that has the ability to read Compact Disks
CD DRIVE
Distributes power to the motherboard over a variety of different voltages
Power Supply
An opening in a computer where an expansion card can be inserted to add new capabilities to the computer
Expansion Slots
Physical connection point on the processor for a removable cable that connects to a peripheral device
Ports
Language of 0’s and 1’s
Binary Code
A term that refers to the instructions that tell a computer what to so
Software or Program
Allows us to convert the keys we type on a keyboard into symbols and letters that are processed through the CPU
Word Processor
Commonly used by financial institutions; have multiple cells and rows
Spreadsheets
A collection of computers,related equipment, and software connected for the purpose of sharing resources or information
Computer Network
The name used for the COMPUTER that controls and allocates network resources among network users
Server
A private account set up on a computer network for each user; an account must be established before a user can gain access to network resources
User Account
A series of characters that uniquely identifies a user on a computer network
User Name/Login Name/User ID/Login ID
A series of characters known only to an individual user;Is intended to be kept private
Password
Smallest unit of storage used by a computer; Can be thought of as being a “1” or “0”
Bit
Smallest unit of computer storage that is capable of holding one character; 8 bits=1 _____
Byte
Equals 1,024 bytes

Equal to one million bytes; Memory is usually measured in this
Megabytes/MB/Meg
Equal to one billion bytes; Hard drive space is usually measured in thise

Data

Icon

A prompt that requests multiple pieces of information from a user

Refers to a named collection of data that is stored on storage device
File
The unique set of characters assigned to a file
File name
An optional addition to the basic file name
File Name Extension
A grouping area on a disk where one or more files or subfolders can be stored
Folder/Directory
A folder that is contained within another folder
Subfolder
Highest level folder/directory on a disk drive; Files and folders can exist
Root Directory/Root Level/Drive Level
Process of copying a file from a remote computer to a local computer
Download
To retain the data currently stored in memory by copying it to a permanent storage device
Write/Save
The standard value used by a computer; Can be overridden
Default/Default Value
Short for web log; A web page that serves as a publicly accessible journal/diary for individuals
Blog
Term used for someone who attempts to gain unauthorized access to a computer system
Hackers
Set of computer instructions that attaches itself to a file and reproduces and spreads from one computer to another; Can destroy data and disrupt operations on a computer
Virus
A software program that without your knowledge is installed and then can gather information from that computer
Spyware
Messages sent electronically from one computer to another
E-Mail/Electronic Mail
A system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the internet
World Wide Web
A global network connecting millions of computers
Internet
Illegal activity that involves sending out mass e-mail messages that appear to be legitimate companies or organizations and want to know personal information
Phishing
Term used for starting, restarting, or initializing a computer has been turned off or the power has failed
Cold Boot/Hard Boot
The term used for starting, restarting, or initializing a computer when the computer is already on but you choose to restart it
