1st test Flashcards
the study of topics like the air around you, radioactivity, distant galaxies, the structure of the earth, its place in the universe, and many others like them.
Physical Science
the smallest particle of an element that has the chemical properties of that element.
Atom
a characteristic of a substance that describes a type of chemical change it can undergo.
Chemical property
a change in which two or more substances combine to form a new substance or substances.
Chemical reaction
a substance made up of atoms of two or more elements.
Compound
a substance that is composed of one type of atom.
Element
a combination of substances in which each substance retains its own chemical and physical properties.
Mixture
the smallest unit of a compound that retains the chemical properties of the compound.
Molecule
a characteristic of a substance that can be observed, such as color, taste, texture, and density.
Physical property
in a chemical reaction, a substance that is formed as a result of the reaction.
Product
the substances that combine in a chemical reaction.
Reactants
If a statue has copper on it and is exposed to weather, a process similar to the one that you observed turns the copper atoms in the statue into…
…copper hydroxycarbonate.
small, equal parts used in measuring.
Units
the system of standard units scientists use in all of their measurements because it is used by everyone.
metric system
Mass measures…
…how much matter exists in an object.
Weight measures…
…how hard a planet’s gravity pulls on that object.
factor-label method
We will first write the measurement we know in fraction form by putting it over one. We will then find the relationship between the unit we have and the unit to which we want to convert. Next, we will use that relationship to make a fraction that, when multiplied by our first fraction, cancels out the unit we have and replaces it with the unit we want to have.
The quantity of a substance within a certain volume of space.
