1st Semester Vocab Terms Flashcards
Terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. We combine them when simplifying expressions or solving equations.
Like Terms
A mathematical phrase that combines numbers, variables, and arithmetic operations to represent a quantity.
Algebraic Expression
An unknown quantity represented by a letter or symbol whose value can change from one problem to the next.
Variable
A quantity that does not change. It is a number by itself with no variable.
Constant
A number that is multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression.
Coefficient
A mathematical sentence stating that 2 algebraic expressions are equivalent.
Equation
A mathematical sentence stating that 2 algebraic expressions are NOT equivalent.
Inequality
To find the value of an expression by substituting in known values of the given variables. Another word for “solve”.
Evaluate
The measure of the steepness of a line and is calculated by rise/run.
Slope
The linear form, Ax + By = C, where A, B, and C are all integers. We use this to find the x and y intercepts.
Standard Form
The linear form, y = mx + b, where m is the slope of the line and b is the y-intercept.
Slope-Intercept Form
A comparison of 2 quantities. Can be written in words, with a colon, or as fraction.
For example, 4 boys to every 5 girls could also be written as 4 boys: 5 girls or 4 boys / 5 girls.
Ratio
A ratio of 2 quantities with different units where the denominator is always one. For example, miles per hour (miles/hour).
Unit Rate
A statement that 2 ratios are equivalent. Since the cross-products are equal, we can cross-multiply to solve these.
Proportion
Synonymous with slope and rate of change and uses the variable k. Calculated by using k = y/x.
Constant of Proportionality
