As a child Grendel innocently explores his confined world. He is brought into adulthood when he is attacked by a bill and realizes that the world is chaotic and governed without reason. Grendel asks “in a world with no given meaning, how Gould govern his/her life”. Grendel observes humans and eventually dies by the hands of Beowulf

Thinks that nothing man creates (religion, poetry, philosophy) will survive the destruction of time
He sees such endeavors as being pointless and ridiculous
Grendel sees how this can be true, but part of him doesn’t want to believe it.

Represents the power of art and imagination to change people’s perceptions about themselves and the world I’m which they live.
Grendel know that the songs are built upon lies, but still finds their power to be seductive and wishes that he had something greater up strive for and believe in
