1st Aid/CPR Flashcards
Cardiopulmonary (Cardiac) arrest
cessation of functional circulation of the blood due to failure of the heart to contract effectively. CPR keeps oxygenated blood circulating to vital organs
Ventricular fibrillation
uncoordinated contraction of the cardiac muscle of the ventricles in the heart, making them quiver rather than contract properly (most commonly identified arrhythmia in cardiac arrest patients)
Caridiac arrest “chain of survival”
- Immediate recognition and activation of EMS
- Early CPR with chest compressions
- Rapid defibrillation
- Paramedics, life support, and medication
- Post-cardiac arrest care
BLS
Basic Life Support
CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: an emergency procedure for manually preserving brain function until further measures to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest. It is indicated in those who are unresponsive with no breathing or abnormal breathing, for example, agonal respirations
