What does dosage indicate in a medication regimen?
The amount of drug to be given.
What does frequency refer to in a medication regimen?
How often the drug should be given.
What does duration mean in the context of medication?
How long the drug is to be given.
What are the five factors of a regimen?
Kind of drug, route of administration, dosage, frequency, duration.
What does t.i.d stand for?
Three times a day.
What does q.i.d stand for?
Four times a day.
What does b.i.d stand for?
Two times a day.
What is pharmacokinetics?
The complex series of events influenced by the manner in which the drug is given.
What is oral (PO) administration?
In the mouth; animals vomiting/have diarrhea may not absorb oral medications.
What is intravenous (IV) administration?
Through the veins; takes effect almost immediately.
What is intramuscular (IM) administration?
In the muscle; sometimes painful and absorbed more slowly than IV.
What is subcutaneous (SQ or SC) administration?
Through the tissue beneath the skin.
What is intradermal (ID) administration?
An injection into the skin, used for testing for allergies.
What is intraperitoneal (IP) administration?
An injection into the abdominal cavity.
What is intraarterial (IA) administration?
An injection into an artery.
What is intracardiac administration?
An injection into the heart, often used for euthanasia and CPR.
What is intramedullary administration?
An injection into the bone marrow cavity.
What is epidural/subdural administration?
An injection into the spine (epidural) or near the spine (subdural).
