1.c. coastal sediment is supplied from a variety of scources Flashcards

1
Q

describe offshore contributions to the coastal sediment supply

A

constructive waves bring sediment to shore from offshore. Tides and currents do the same. Wind blows sediment from other locations

Q

decribehuman contributions to coastal sediment supply

A

beach nourishment helps maintain sediment equilibrium

so do other types of human intervention eg. groynes

Q

describe the terrestrial sources of coastal sediment

A
  1. rivers - up to 90% of coastal sed , esp coasts with steep gradients, occurs a lot during floods.
  2. wave erosion - large amount of sed.
    - eg. cliff erosion increased by rising sea levels + Storm surge events
    - weak cliffs + high energy environments can contribute up to 70% of material supplied to beaches

Q

deposition; rivers to sea

A
  1. most rivers sediment load is deposited at the mouth due to loss of energy
  2. when fresh water meets salt water the flocculation of clay occurs; [fine light materials clump together due to electrical charges between them] making them heavier so they sink.
