1.c. Coastal sediment is supplied from a variety of sources. Flashcards
The various sources of coastal sediment:
- terrestrial, including fluvial deposition, weathering and mass movement, marine erosion, aeolian deposition and longshore drift
Fluvial deposition-
where the river meets the sea -> water looses energy -> sediment is deposited
Weathering-
the wearing away and break down of rock IN SITU (stays in the same place)
Mass movement-
the movement of material DOWN A SLOPE UNDER GRAVITY -> fallen material adds to sediment
Marine erosion-
-> the wearing away and removal of sediment by waves
Aeolian deposition-
-> winds transport and deposit sediment along the coastline -> depending on if its onshore or offshore winds
Longshore drift-
-> waves transport sediment along the coastline in the direction of the prevailing winds -> some places loose sediment and some places gain it (within a sediment cell)
The various sources of coastal sediment:
- offshore, including marine deposition
Marine deposition-
Waves transport sediment from the sea bed -> and deposit in onto the beach
The various sources of coastal sediment:
- human, including beach nourishment.
Beach nourishment-
they add sand onto the beach
