1b.Physical Factors Flashcards
1
Q
Climate
A
- Wind: carries out erosion, transportation, deposition
- Precipitation: snow, sleet, rain (low in high latitude areas)
- Temperature: High altitude areas experience long periods of 0< summer temps
2
Q
Geology - Lithology
A
- Physical & chemical compositions
- Weak lithology = little resistance (will be weathered / eroded)
3
Q
Geology - Structure
A
- Properties of individual rock: jointing, bedding, permeability (porous rocks - absorb water)
- Also includes angles of rock
4
Q
Latitude & Altitude
A
- High latitude: cold, dry, little seasonal variation, less melting, large ice sheets
- Low latitude: warmer, more accumulation, more melting, more seasonal variation
- High altitude: cold, some glaciers can be located near equator
5
Q
Relief and Aspect
A
- Steeper relief of landscape = more resultant of gravity down slope
- Aspect away from sun = longer periods of below 0 temps (positive mas balance)
6
Q
Other Physical factors
A
- Ice formation (snow into ice)
- Meltwater
- Deposition
- Glacial movement (how far glacier grows)
