1B Inorganic Ions Flashcards
What is an ion?
atom that has an ELECTRIC charge
What is the name of an ion with a positive charge?
cation
What is the name of an ion with a negative charge?
anion
What compound doesn’t an inorganic ion contain?
Carbon
What ions are in Hb and what are their importance?
> IRON ions (Fe2+)
Hb transports O2 around the body
It is the iron ions that O2 BINDS to (which forms Fe3+ until O2 is UNLOADED)
What ions determine the pH of an environment and what are their importance?
> HYDROGEN ions
The MORE hydrogen ions there are, the LOWER the pH (more ACIDIC)
the pH of an environment has an effect on ENZYME-CONTROLLED REACTIONS
What ions are important in transport and what are their importance?
> SODIUM ions
> Substances like GLUCOSE and AMINO ACIDS can be transported across the CSM ALONGSIDE SODIUM in CO-TRANSPORT
What is the importance of phosphate ions attached to DNA/RNA?
ESTER BONDS form between the PHOSPHATE GROUP and 5th/3rd CARBON of the two nucleotide molecules
What is the importance of phosphate ions attached to ATP?
The BONDS between the PHOSPHATE GROUPS in ATP STORES ENERGY that is released in HYDROLYSIS reactions which release andphosphate group to produce ADP
Where do inorganic ions occur?
> Present in SOLUTION in the CYTOPLASM of CELLS
> In the BODY FLUIDS of organisms
What determines an ion’s specific role?
Its specific properties
