What is the definition of polydipsia?
Excessive thirst or excess drinking
What is the definition of Adipsia?
Inappropriate lack of thirst
What is anorexia?
Lack or loss of appetite
What is obesity?
Abnormal or excessive fat accumulation which presents a risk to health
Which hormone is responsible for the regulation of osmolarity?
ADH
If plasma concentration of ADH is low, will there be diuresis or anti-diuresis?
Low ADH = dilute urine = alot of water loss = diuresis
Which regions are sensory osmoreceptors found in the hypothalamus?
Supraoptic nuclei and paraventricular nuclei
What are some causes of primary polydipsia?
Mental illness - psychogenic polydipsia
Brain injury
organic brain damage
What is secondary polydipsia?
Medical issues which disrupt any step in osmoregulation or alter ADH
Which medical conditions can cause secondary polydipsia?
ADH deficiency or resistance
Kidney Failure
Conn’s syndrome
Addison’s disease
Sickle Cell Anaemia
