A residential router- considered a multifunctional device. one of it’s primary functions is to forward traffic between the LAN and the WAN (the internet) even though routing is just one of it’s functions.

A
- RJ-45 ports to connect to a local cabled network. typically labelled as LAN ports.
- Radio antennas to transmit and receive wireless signals
- Modem to connect to ISP’s network labeled as WAN port. Some will have RK-45 some have RJ-11 port to connect to DSL (digital subscriber line) service.

A
- Ethernet Switch: RJ-45 connectors are internally connected by an ethernet switch
- wireless access point: functions as a wireless hub. also wired to ethernet switch via an internal port. forms a bridge b/w cabled and wireless segments.
- each host interface is identified by MAC address.
