1b anatomical nomenclature Flashcards
tori and exostoses
- exophytic growths of normal compact bone
- may become symptomatic if thin overlying mucosa is traumatically ulcerated
exostoses
buccal + palatal
torus palatinus
midline of the hard palate, common in asian and inuit population, females 2:!
tori mandibularis
- mandible lingual to canine/pre-molars
- 90% bilateral
- prevalence in 5-40%
exostoses
facial aspect of alveolar ridge
stafne bone defect
focal concavity of cortical bone on lingual surface
fordyce granules
- ectopic sebaceous glands
- yellow papules most commonly on buccal mucosa or lips
linea alba
linear white plaque typically along buccal mucosa at the occlusal plane
-clenching or bruxing
morsicatio
chronic mucosal chewing
***leukoedema
- generalized gray opalescence of the mucosa
- most commonly involves buccal mucosa
- common in smokers, african americans (70-90% adults; 50% children)
- disappears when mucosa is stretchee
varicosities (varices)
prominent veins most often seen on the ventral and lateral tongue
67% of adults >60
median rhomboid glossitis
flat/slightly raised erythematous rhomboid area of midline dorsal tongue
-etiology unclear (developmental vs. infectious)
benign migratory glossitis***
- geographic tongue/erythema migrans
- common immune-mediated condition
- 1-3% of population
- one or more erythematous patches incompletely bordered by yellow-white peripheries
- involves dorsal, lateral, or ventral tongue
- ectopic geographic tongue seldem seen
benign migratory glossitis
topical benedryl or steroid may be considered for rare symptomatic cases
fissured tongue
associated with benign migratory glossitis
