1A - Intro to research Flashcards
Definition of science?
Is a field + practise that obtains knowledge and generates theories through observation + experiments
Definition of Empirical evidence?
Info gotten from DIRECT and SYSTEMATIC observation/ experimentation
Definition of pseudoscience? (non science)
Ideas formed without empirical evidence/ use of scientific methods
eg. Astrology or phrenology
Definition of Scientific Method?
The procdeure used to obtain knowledge
-involves hypothesis formulation, testing, observation, measurement and recording
Definition of model and theory?
Model- representation of concept, process/behavior. Made to make something easier to understand. Eg- multi-store model
Theory- proposition/set of principles used to explain something/ make prediction about relationship between concepts
eg. behavourism
What is in a scientific method? (4 mains)
- Aim - statment outlining purpose
- Hypothesis - testable prediction about the outcome of investigation
- Variable - condition of an experiment that can be measure/manipulated
- Population - group of people who are the focus of the research from which a sample is drawn from
Types of Variables? (5)
- INDEPENDANT- changed, selected or controlled by the researcher (will impact dv) ______
- DEPENDANT - measure I
- CONTROLLED - held constant to ensure manipulation of IV effects DV
- EXTRANEOUS - not IV but may effect results. try to eliminate before research
- CONFOUNDING - could have been an extraneous variable not controlled or something that couldn’t be controlled
Prompt for Hypothesis?
That for POPU., the IV will DIRECTIONAL PREDIC. the DV than those IV
