1a - Cell Structure Flashcards
What is a Eukaryote?
A complex organism made from eukaryotic cells (complex cells) an example would be a human.
What is a Prokaryote?
a single celled organism made from a prokaryotic cell. an example would be a bacteria
what are the tiny parts of cells called?
subcellular structures
what is the nucleus
a part of the cell containing all DNA that controls the cell’s activity
What is Cytoplasm?
a gel like substance where chemical reactions occur
What is the cell membrane?
it is the outer part of the cell that hold it together and controls what goes in and out
What is mitochondria?
‘the powerhouse of the cell’, mitochondria is where respiration happens
What are ribosomes?
where protiens are made in a cell
What is a cell wall?
(only plant cells) a rigid structure of cellulose that strengthens and supports the cell
What is a vacuole?
(only in plant cells), contains cell sap , a weak solution of sugar and salts
What are chloroplasts?
where photosynthesis occurs. they contain chlorophyll, a green substance that absorbs light needed for photosynthesis
what does a bacterial cell look like?
a prokaryote, consisting of a cell membrane, outer cell wall, a circular strand of dna inside, ribosomes and plasmids (small rings of dna)
