1A: Atoms and Particles Flashcards
Define anion
Ion with overall negative charge because they gain electrons for full outer shell
Define atom
Basic building blocks of matter with subatomic particles
Define atomic number
Number of protons in an atom
Define cation
Ion will overall positive charge because they lose electrons for full outer shell
Define compound
Made up of more than one type of atom (methane, water)
Define electron
Negatively charged subatomic particle that surround the nucleus in orbitals
Define ion
Formed when atom loses/gains electrons
Define molecule
Two or more atoms chemically bonded together (water, nitrogen, calcium oxide)
Define mass number
Total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Define isotope
Atoms of same element with same number of protons, but different number of neutrons (therefore changing the relative atomic mass)
What is electrostatic attraction?
The attraction between positively charged and negatively charged particles. It is how electrons are bound to the atom, because they are attracted to positively charged protons in the nucleus
Define element
Pure substance made from single type of atom (monoatomic, molecules, lattices)
