Q

Coronary band

A

Is found where the hoof capsule meets the hairline of the leg. It contains the periople, and the coronary corium, and is the main growth and nourishment area of the hoof wall.

Q

Corium

A

Individual areas of growth and nourishment for hoof capsule containing blood and nerve supplies. There are 5 coriums; periople, coronary, laminar, frog and sole.

Q

Deep digital flexor tendon

A

Flexor tendon that runs down back of cannon bone. At the lower end it widens to connect to the lower end of the 3rd phalanx at the back, in an aponeurosis.

21
Q

Extensor tendon

A

Extends the lower leg

22
Q

Flexor tendon

A

Flexes or lifts the lower leg

23
Q

Foramina

A

Holes in the pedal bone

24
Q

Ground surface

A

The part of the hoof capsule that is in contact with the ground.

25
Q

Heel area

A

The back third of hoof capsule when viewed from the side

26
Q

Hoof capsule

A

The horny wall encapsulating the lower digit and the internal structures contained within it.

27
Q

Hoof wall

A

The outer capsule of the hoof made of modified keratinised epithelial cells

28
Q

Hyaline cartilage

A

Pliable cartilage that forms the lateral cartilage of the hoof capsule.

29
Q

Interosseus ligament

A

Ligament that tie bones together

30
Q

Keratin

A

Main protein component of horn growth it hardens and cements epithelial cells

31
Q

Laminae

A

Corium of the 3rd phalanx (sensitive laminae). The main laminae that grow out in thin plates are known as primary laminae, and from each of these 100-150 secondary laminae grow out at right angles

32
Q

Lateral cartilage

A

Two wings of cartilage that grow out of the back of the 3rd phalanx and extend above the hoof capsule at heel.

33
Q

Lateral Palmer nerve

A

Nerve supplying the hoof capsule. It runs down the outside of the digit, and supplies the pedal, navicular, and part of lateral cartilage, laminae, frog and sole coriums

34
Q

Long Pasternak bone

A

Aka 1st phalanx

35
Q

Methionine

A

Essential amino acid needed for production of merit in in the hoof wall

36
Q

Quarter

A

The middle third of the hoof capsule when viewed from the side

37
Q

Medial Palmer nerve

A

Morris the lateral Palmer nerve on the inside of the fetlock joint. It’s branches supply the coronary corium, part of the lateral cartilage, part of the laminar, frog and sole coriums

38
Q

Navicular

A

Aka distal sesamoid bone. Small bone found at the back of the pedal joint between the 2nd and 3rd phalanx.

39
Q

Navicular bursa

A

Fluid filled sac surrounding and protecting the navicular bone.

40
Q

Oissein

A

Collagen type substance, one of the main components of bone

41
Q

Pedal bone

A

Aka 3rd phalanx

42
Q

Periople

A

Found at the top of coronary band where the hoof capsule joins the hair of the leg. Contains the perioplic corium.

43
Q

Short Pasternak bone

A

Aka 2nd phalanx

44
Q

Sole

A

Insensitive sole: Found on the ground surface of the hoof capsule. Consists of horny sole, and lies between the white line and the frog.

Sensitive sole: lies underneath the insensitive sole, and contains the sole corium which has the nerve and blood supply to provide growth and nourishment for the sole.

45
Q

Stratum tectorium

A

Acts like a water proof varnish

46
Q

Superficial digital flexor tendon

A

The flexor tendon running down the outside of the deep digital flexor tendon, it splits below the annular ligament, one branch attaches to 1st phalanx and the other to the 2nd Phalanx.

47
Q

Suspensory navicular ligament

A

Attached 2nd phalanx to navicular bone

48
Q

Terminal arch

A

End of the digital artery at front of 3rd phalanx. From here it supplies the lower laminae and sole corium

49
Q

Toe

A

The front of the hoof at the ground surface. The first third of the hoof capsule when viewed from the side.

50
Q

Venous plexus

A

Vein network. Three in hoof capsule; laminar, solar, and coronary

51
Q

White line

A

The join between sensitive and insensitive laminae. Seen on the ground surface between the hoof wall and sole.
