19946 - DA&PKOHF Flashcards
1st Phalanx
Also known as long pattern bone
2nd Phalanx
AKA short pastern bone
3rd Phalanx
AKA pedalbone or coffin bone
Annular Ligament
Broad bands of fibrous ligament tissue that usually surround and direct the pull of a tendon
Apex frog
The point of the frog that ends in the center of the sole of the ground surface of the hoof.
Arteriovenous anastomoses
AKA AVA’s, these are the highly specialized blood supply of the hoff capsule that can transfer directly from arteries to veins without passing through capillaries.
Articular surface
Of Joints - The surfaces that contact with other bones, they have cartilage on their surface.
Bars
These are where the hoof wall turns in at the heel, can be seen on ground surface when hoof is raised, run parallel to the frog.
Biotin
Essential ami o acid needed for production of the keratin in the hoof wall.
Bulb of heel
The softer area of the hoof capsule at the back of the foot behind the frog, make of soft elastic horn, covered by periople.
Collateral
these are two pairs of ligaments that run on both sides of pedal ligaments joint and connect the 2nd and 3rd phalanx.
Common Digital
AKA CDET, this extensor tendon runs down the front of extensor tendon the digit and connects with the center front of the pedal bone.
Concussion
Ths is the force that occurs when the weight of the horse contacts with the ground surface.
Coronary band
Is found where the hoof capsule meets the hairline of the leg. It contains the periople, and the coronary corium, and is the main growth and nourishment area of the hoof wall.
Coronary Circumflex Artery
Branching of the digital artery the 2nd phalanx to form a circle coronary band, supplying coronary cofounder and upper laminae of the toe and quarters.
Corium
Individual areas of growth and nourishment for hoof capsule containing blood and nerve supplies. There are 5 coriums; periople, coronary, laminar, frog and sole.
Deep digital flexor tendon
Flexor tendon that runs down back of cannon bone. At the lower end it widens to connect to the lower end of the 3rd phalanx at the back, in an aponeurosis.
Digital artery
Main arterial supply of the hoof capsule
Digital cushion
Pad of fibrous tissue that lies underneath the frog, and between the lateral cartilages
Distal Sesamoid bone
Aka the navicular bone
