What were the aims of ERA 1988
-Marketisation (make schools compete with one another for gov funding)
-Parentocracy (Parents have a choice on their children to what skl theyre gonna go to
-improve efficiency in schools
-ensure that education was equipped with children with the skills for work
What is the national curriculum
-all students being taught the same thing (7-16)
-requires to teach core subjects e.g math science and english ect in gcse level
What is open enrolment
-parents allowed to select multiple schools to send their children too
-had to choose a first choice school
-encouraged a ‘shopping around’ type of policy
What is national testing
-introduction to sats and gcses
What is ofsted
-an agency which inspects and grades them
-est 1988
-e.g underachieving schools will get shut down after inspection
What is league tables
-tables ranked solely on grades
-parents can see the best schools for their children
What is the funding formula
-funding for schools based on how many pupils they attract
-funded on each individual from 1988

There are 3 types of parents
-privileged skilled choosers: m/c parents who use cultural and economic capital to gain education capital on their children
-disconnected local choosers: w/c who were restricted by lack of economic and cultural capital
-semi skilled choosers: also w/c but ambitious for their children but didnt have cultural capital
