- Containment policy has failed in Asia
- USA feared a Sino-Soviet conspiracy and the domino theory

- USSR and China became closer: USA feared a bamboo curtain
- Recognition cold war had spread far east/getting out of control
- Intensified the arms race
- WW3 threatened

1953

- Because Hungary wanted to leave the Warsaw Pact

USSR’s response to the formation of NATO
- 1955: Military alliance including eastern European communist countries (except Yugoslavia)
- Khrushchev wanted to maintain communism in eastern Europe

Communist north supported by USSR + China, Capitalist South supported by USA
1954 - 1975
- Vietnam eventually became a unified communist state (major victory for communism)
What were Khrushchev’s policies?
Took over in 1953, following Stalin’s death
1) Ended USSR’s feuds with China + Yugoslavia
2) Talked of peaceful coexistence with west
3) Relaxed control on eastern Europe e.g. pulled troops out of Austria that has been there since WW2
