the 38th parallel. North- Kim Il Sung. South- Syngman Rhee

Korean War
June 1950 - July 1953. No real advancement made, borders still very close to 38th parallel.
US and China join
September 1950 USA. October 1950 China.
MAD
Theory that atomic war would have no winner.

Sputnik
- Used same technology as ICBMs so it was a double blow. USA developed ICBMs in 1958.
Polaris
- USA submarines capable of launching missiles close to shore of USSR
Tsar Bomba
Largest nuclear detonation ever. 1961
Anti-ballistic Missile.
1968 Soviet developed system could stop US missiles.
MIRV
- US developed. Warheads could hit multiple targets.
Space Race.
1961 Gagarin. 1969 Armstrong.
De-Stalinisation
- Secret speech. Made other Warsaw pact members believe that they would be more free.
Hungarian uprising
Rakosi- Imre Nagy. Nagy compromised with soviets to remove tanks 29 Oct. However, declared that Hungary was leaving the Warsaw pact- 3rd November soviets enter Budapest.
Hungarian uprising stats.
3000 killed. 200’000 fled to Austria.
Nagy reforms.
Free elections, farmers owned land, fair trials.
Paris summit agenda
May 1960. ‘Braindrain’, Cuba, Test-ban agreement.
U2 Incident
1st May 1960 U2 spy plane shot down. US govt claimed it was a weather monitoring plane but that was clearly a lie. Khrushchev demanded an apology but when Eisenhower refused, Khr. left the peace summit.
