190204 Flashcards
What is an actuator
A device that receives signals from the ECM
IE- solenoids, torque motors, warning lights and fuel injectors
What is an analog signal
A waveform that has a continual change in amplitude. Can be AC or DC sine wave
What is a digital signal
Either on or off between two fixed voltages, commonly 0-5V with ECM circuits
What are diagnostic trouble codes
Output signals generated by the ECM when it detects a system fault
What is a parameter
A programable feature, can be either manufacture programable or customer programable
Passwords are used to prevent what
Unauthorized access to parameters stored in the ECM
Define pulse width modulation
Occurs when a circuit is rapidly turned on and off over a period of time.
-Pulse refers to the on-off and
-width refers to the amount of time the circuit is on compared to when it is off
-modulation means the circuit is controlled over a period of time
Define sensor
Input devices that monitor pressure, temperature, fluid levels or mechanical movement
Some sensors are referred too as transducers
What are some types of operator controlled switches AKA function switches
-Throttle pedal or throttle position sensor (tps)
-Cruise control
-P.T.O switches
-Retarder
What is the diagnostic data link used for
Download new operating parameters into the ECM or to update stored information in the ECM
Often referred to as software reprogramming
What main components does the EXM include
-operates on a dedicated power source from the vehicle (a key switch turns it on and off)
-A voltage regulator or power supply provides stable voltage for sensor operation
-input control consists of converters and amplifier that modify the sensor signal
Define Ram
Random access memory
When power is lost the information stored is lost
Define rom
Read only memory
Can only be retrieved programmed from factory and cannot be changed
Define prom
Programable read only memory
Can be programmed at a later date but once they are programmed they cannot be changed
Define EPROM
EPROM can be programmed
