19 - Reproductive Behaviour Flashcards
Difference in male vs female stages of reproductive behaviour
Male: can occur at any time
Female: sexual activity confined to estrus
Stages of male reproductive behaviour
- Precopulatory stage
- Copulatory stage
- Postcopulatory stage
Stages of female repro beh
- Attractivity
- Proceptivity
- Receptivity
Order of events in the male precopulatory stage
Search for partner -> courtship -> sexual arousal -> erection -> penile protrusion
Order of events in copulatory stage of males
mounting -> intromission -> ejaculation
Order of events in postcopulatory stage
Dismount -> refractory period (recovery) -> memory
Bull search, courtship and copulatory behaviours
Search: approach sexually active group of females testing for lordosis, flehmen
Courtship: nuzzling and licking or perineal region. Chin resting, testing for lordosis
Copulatory: penile protrusion with dribbling of seminal fluid, erection and attempted mounts
Stallion search, courtship, copulatory behaviours
Search: visual search, flehmen
Courtship: high degree of excitement. Bites neck/withers.
Copulatory: penile protrusion with no preejaculatory expulsion of seminal fluid, mounting
Ram search, courtship and consummation behaviour
Search: sniffing and licking of ano-genital region, nudging ewe, flehmen
Courtship: neck outstretched and held horizontally
Consummation: repeated dorsal elevation of scrotum, penile protrusion with no dribbling of seminal fluid, mounting

Male behaviours in diff species
What are “warm-up” stalls
Stimulate sexual behaviour in males: visual stimulation by watching other males mount
Three types of female sexual behaviour
- Attractivity: behaviour and other signals that attract the male (locomotion, posture, vocalization, pheromones)
- Proceptivity: behaviours by the female towards the male to stimulate copulation
- Receptivity: copulatory behaviour (stance) by the female
How are physical activity and the female cycle related
More steps (increased activity) indicates estrus
Cow search, courtship, consummation behaviours
Search (attractivity): increased locomotion, vocalization, twitching, elevation of the tail
Courtship (proceptivity): increased grooming, mounting attempts with other females
Consummation (receptivity): homosexual mounting & standing to be mounted

Literally do not want to look
Reproductive behaviour is programmed when? How
During prenatal development
High concentrations of E2 causes developing behaviour related brain centers to be “defeminized”
Absence of E2 = behaviour related brain centers become “fully feminized”
How does female fetus exposure to E2 affect behaviour? T4?
Decreased estrous behaviour, increased male-like behaviour
T4 the same
How does male exposure to E2 affect behaviour? P4? Testosterone?
All have no effect (normal male beh)

Characteristics of copulation in bull and ram (ejaculation, primary stimulus, site of semen dep, collection technique)
Ejaculation: 1-2 seconds (1 pelvic thrust)
Primary stimulus: temperature
Site of semen dep: vagina (near cervix)
Collection technique: artificial vagina
Characteristics of copulation in the stallion
Ejaculation: 20-60 seconds (multiple pelvic thrusts)
Primary stimulus: friction
Site of semen deposition: vagina (some semen enters uterus)
Collection technique: artificial vagina
Characteristics of copulation in the boar
Ejaculation: 5-20 minutes
Primary stimulus: pressure on glans penis
Site of semen dep: cervix and uterus
Collection: gloved hand
Characteristics of copulation in the dog
Ejaculation: 5-45 mins
Primary stim: pressure on penis
Site of semen dep: cervix & uterus
Collection: artificial vagina
