19-20 Science CAL Exam Revision Flashcards
Living Organisms
What’s in a cell?
- Cell membrane: this surrounds the cell and allows the nutrients to enter and waste to leave
- Nucleus: this controls what happens. It contains DNA, the genetic information that cells need to grow and produce.
- Cytoplasm: This is a jelly-like substance in which chemical reactions happen.
- Mitochondria: these are the powerhouse of the cell. They are structures where respiration takes place.
Living Organisms
How are plants and animals cells different?
Plant cells have all the parts in the list above, plus a few extra structures:
Cell wall: this is an outer structure that surrounds the cell and gives it support.
Vacuole: this is a place within the cytoplasm of plant cells that contain sap.
Chloroplasts: these contain Chlorophylland are site of photosynthesis.
Living Organisms
How big are cells?
Cells can vary greatly in size. You need a microscope to see must human cells
Living Organisms
What is an Organ?
Group of different tissues that work together to do a particular job
Ex.
Circulatory and digestive system.
Living Organisms
Organelles
Tiny structures which carry out various functions within a cell.
Living Organisms
Cell
The basic unit of all living organisims.
Living Organisms
Tissues
Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.
Living Organisms
Organs
Different tissues working together to carry out a particular function.
Living Organisms
Organ System
A group of Organs that work together to do a job
Nutrition, digestion and excretion
Process of digestion
- The Mouth
- The Stomach
- The Intestines
- The Rectum
Respiration and Gas change
What is photosynthesis
A chemical reaction that takes place inside the plant, producing food for the plant to survive.
Respiration and Gas change
Word Equation for Photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide+ Water————> Glucose+ Oxygen
