18th To 19th Century 1700-1900 Flashcards
What did Edward Jenner do
Jenner noticed that milkmaids who had gotten cowpox were not affected from small pox. Jenner guessed that the exposure to cowpox could be used to protect against small pox. He could not explain his theory.
How did Edward Jenner test his theory
He inoculated a boy called James Phipps with cowpox. When Jenner was sure the inoculation had worked he deliberately gave the boy small pox but the disease had no affect.
What did John snow do
Studied deaths from cholera and made a map of them. He traced the source of the outbreak to a water pump on broad street London and demonstrated that contaminated water was the cause of cholera. But was unable to explain.
What did Louis Pasteur do
He found that microscopic bacteria which turned beer bad could be killed by heating it he then published his book on germ theory and had proven the link between germs and disease he also discovered a vaccine for chicken cholera.
