-bribing no longer possible
-long-run poorer men could afford to stand as candidates
-political parties had to be clearer in policies
-electorate willing to question candidates

-142 seats redistributed
-London went from 22 to 55 MPs
-Cornwall went from 44 to 7 MPs
What were the positives of the 1885 redistribution of seats act?
-political power/influence of aristocracy/landowners was hindered.
-no. of aristocratic ministers/MPs declined
-end of old constituencies meant an emphasis on national issues than local
-after 1885 election manufactures/commercial men outnumbered landowners in HoC

There was no shirt-term significance only long-term
