What caused Haitian independence and how did it impact Cuba?

A

80% slave labour in Haiti, 1791 slave revolution, fought for 12 years, defeated the French and British by 1803, 1804 became independent, eliminated slavery and became the second independent country in the Americas. Produced a windfall for Cuba, Haitian plantations shut down, Cuba took over their markets. Political and economic ostracism of Haiti.

A

Offered Cuba the right to free trade with other countries worldwide, Cuba accepted, invited European and American companies/investors/engineers, merchants established themselves in Northern Cuba, brought cultural influences, Spain hadn’t industrialised, Cuba industrialised because of Europe and America.

A

No incentive to manufacture their own products, cheaper to import from the US, division of labour, Cuba = sugar/tobacco, US = material goods, machinery.

A

Cuba got first railroad in Latin America between farms and mills, production became 10-20 times more efficient, leap in productivity, still need slaves on the farm, large investment.

A

Wonder why they’re giving money to Spain when they could work directly with Cuba or annes them and trade freely, made offers to buy Cuba, never worked, Northern states didn’t want another slave state. Some Cubans wanted to be Americanised after seeing American culture, supported statehood.

A

Little trade from/with Spain, no common interests, Spain imposed restrictions on trade, seen as a backwards country, growing interest for independence. Spaniards in Cuba favoured over Cubans, Cuban resentment.

When was the first Cuban Revolution and what was the impact of this war?

A

1868-1878, Eastern Cuba, freed slaves to help them fight, linked independence and emancipation, fought to a draw, 1879 treaty, Spain didn’t live up to expectation, seized leaders of the 10 years wars and exiled or imprisoned them. Cuba had approached US for aid, US reluctant to get involved in slavery issues as there were still problems in the South. Cuba abolished slavery in 1880s. “Cuba Libre”

How did the depression in 1893 impact Cua?

A

Deep depression in the US, Congress put another tariff on Cuban sugar and raw tobacco, Cubans realise the problem of being dependent on the US, also have an economic recession, trade with US slowed.
