1.8 Inorganic ions Flashcards
1
Q
Where do inorganic ions occur
A
Occur in solution in the cytoplasm and body fluid of organisms, some in high concentrations and others in very low concentrations.
2
Q
What is the function of hydrogen ions
A
- Formula = H+
- They determine the pH of substances such as blood.
- A higher concentration of H+ ions means the solution has a lower pH (more acidic).
3
Q
What is the function of iron ions
A
- Formula = Fe 2+ or Fe 3+
- They are a component of haemoglobin which is an oxygen carrying molecule in red blood cells.
4
Q
What is the function of sodium ions
A
- Formula = Na+
- They are involved in the co-transport of glucose and amino acids.
5
Q
What is the function of phosphate ions
A
- Formula = PO4³⁻ or PO3³⁻
- They are a component of DNA and ATP.
