1791 - Haydn No. 94 (G major) Flashcards
1
Q
2nd Movement
1791 - Haydn No. 94 (G major)
A
- Andante, in the subdominant.
- Is a set of variations (common form for 2nd movement).
- Haydn uses humour in this symphony, attempting to make the audience jump with a suddenly loud chord after a quiet opening.
- It was a publicity stunt, to get people talking, and to outshine an upstart competitor.

Q
3rd Movement
1791 - Haydn No. 94 (G major)
A
- Faster than traditional minuet.
- Makes use of repeated accents in the second half.
- The more aggressive writing and the increase speed both point to the move in Haydn (and then Beethoven) towards writing faster Scherzo movements rather than true minuets.
