Appearance of leptospires
Coiled, thin, highly motile organisms that have hooked ends and two periplasmic flagella, with polar extrusions from the cytoplasmic membrane that are responsible for motility

Dark-field examination
Silver impregnation staining of tissues
Time it takes for culture to become positive
It may take weeks to months
Most important reservoir of leptospirosis
Rodents, especially rats
Important vehicle in transmission

Vast majority of infections cause
a. no or only mild disease in humans
