17.3 Meningitis Flashcards

1
Q

Meningitis CSF findings:

  1. bacteria
  2. viral
  3. fungal
A
  1. neutrophils, low CSF glucose. (do gram stain and culture)
  2. lymphocytes, normal CSF glucose
  3. lymphocytes, low CSF glucose

Viruses don’t eat glucose but bacteria and fungi do

Q

Meningitis

-complications

A

Usu seen with bacterial meningitis b/c of pus and inflammation.

  1. Death from herniation secondary to edema
  2. Fibrosis-related sequelae (from healing) can cause hydrocephalus, hearing loss, seizures

Q

What is normal CSF glucose level?

-what changes it

A

Normal expected is 2/3 that of blood glucose.

So 100 blood glucose, expect 66 CSF glucose.
