17.3 Anatomy: Vessels of Upper Limb Flashcards
What does the subclavian artery become?
What does it supply?
Axillary artery as it transverses the axilla
Supplies walls of axilla, breast, humerus
What does the axillary artery become? Where?
Brachial artery, lower border of teres major
If someone sliced their brachial artery, where would you compress to stop the bleed?
End up in middle of lateral/medial epicondyles
Push lateral against shaft of humerus
What does the brachial artery divide into? Where do they track?
Radial and ulnar artery
Radial with radial nerve, ulnar with ulnar nerve under FCU
What does the brachial artery give off to supply the posterior aspect of the arm?
With what?
Profunda brachii artery
With radial nerve in spiral groove
What does the ulnar artery give off soon after its origin?
Common interosseous artery (splits into anterior and posterior)
Where do the radial and ulnar arteries run in relation to the hand?
Ulnar artery goes w/ nerve over flexor retinaculum (vulnerable)
Radial nerve through snuffbox, dorsum of hand, first dorsal IO pierced
What goes in the deep ulnar arch and superficial palmar arch?
Deep ulnar arch: radial
Superficial palmar arch: ulnar
What do the deep veins do below the middle joint?
Follow the arteries but below middle joint: vena commitantes
What are the three main superficial veins of the forearm (dorsal)?
Basilic (medial)
Cephalic (lateralside)
Dorsal venous arch
What is the communication between the caphalic and basilic vein?
Median cubital vein
Where does the cephalic vein run via?
Deltopectoral groove–> clavipectoral fascia–>axillary vein (where the basilic vein and brachial veins meet)
What drains the upper limb?
Axillary lymph nodes (also drains upper quadrant of chest wall/breast)
