1.7 Particle Physics Flashcards
1
Q
What are leptons?
A
They are elementary particles which always exist separately and do not combine to form composite subatomic particles.
2
Q
What are two examples of leptons and their respective charges?
A
Electrons - Charge = -1
Neutrino - Charge = 0
3
Q
What are hadrons and the 3 types of hadrons?
A
They are subatomic particles which are made up of 2 or more quarks.
The types are:
- Baryons (3 quark combination)
- Antibaryon (3 antiquark combination)
- Meson (1 quark and 1 anti quark pair)
4
Q
What is the most stable baryon
A
Protons are the most stable
Neutrons aren’t because they have a half-life of 10 minutes when free from an atom.
