What happens in the introduction and first reading?
• Reading of the title of the bill
• bill is printed and receives a number
What happens in the second reading?
Debate and vote on the principle of the bill.
What happens in the committee stage?
• Relevant Parliamentary committee examines the bill
• bill studied clause by clause
What happens during the report stage?
• relevant parliamentary committee reports amended bill
• amendments are considered and voted on
What happens during the third reading?
Debate and vote on the amended version of the bill
What happens between the third reading and Royal assent?
The bill is sent to the other chamber and same process is repeated.
What is Royal assent?
• Given by the Governor General or by one of his/her deputies
• the bill receives royal assent after being passed by both houses
What is the standing committee?
Permanent committees that oversee work of government departments
What is the special committee?
Established to investigate special issues
What is the committee of the whole?
Comprised of all members of HOC or Senate and may be used when a quick decision or discussion is necessary
