What are the 4 most common conditions affecting the hip?
- Trochanteris bursitis
- Gluteus medius bursitis
- osteoarthritis
- femur fractures
How common is hip pain in patient’s over 60?
14.3% report significant pain on most days over a 6 week study
What is the classic pattern of trochanteric bursitis?
lateral hip pain aggravated by direct pressure
-if it’s progressive lateral hip pain by direct pressure and weight bearing, concern for metastatic cancer
What is the classic presentation of meralgia paresthetica?
- hip pain associated with paresthesias, hypesthesia, and other symptoms in the anterolateral thigh due to lateral femoral n. entrapment
- localized pain, “burning or uncomfortable heightened sensation”
- not influenced by direct pressure, hip or low back movement
Classic presentation of lumbar radiculopathy
lateral hip pain extending over wider area than meralgia paresthetica, radiating down leg and into foot, w or w/o foot numbness
-L4-5 nerve roots
Myalopathy
nerve pain so severe that you cannot move extremity
What type of people are prone to meralgia paresthetica?
- Pple w/ large abdominal panus
- Tight belts: police officers, electricians
