16.2 Synthetic routes Flashcards
What is organic synthesis
The preparation of complex molecules from simple starting materials
Predicting properties and reactions
By identifying functional group
Look at solubility etc.
What is the term target molecule
Used to describe the compound that the chemist is attempting to prepare by organic synthesis
How can the target molecule be obtained in a simple synthesis
By reacting a readily availbl starting material with a readily available reagent in a one-step reaction
Two stage synthesis:
Identify functional groups in starting and targe molecules
Identify intermediate that links starting and target molecules
State reagents and conditions for each step
What is taxol
Used as an anti-cancer drug - ovarian, breast and colon
What is ozonolysis
A technique used in organic chemistry to break open a C=C double bond
Useful in organic synthesis for preparation of aldehydes and ketones
