You have the confidence of the program being produced by a ‘professional’ company
Less likely to be buggy as it will have gone through extensive testing
Meets professional standards
Official updates, support, upgrades and fixes will be released
Proprietary disadvantages
May not meet the users needs and has limited customisability
Costs money to buy the software
Reliant on the company that made it, what happens if they go bust?
Open source advantages
Usually free to download
Allows users to access the code to edit/change it themselves
Open source disadvantages
May not have regular updates
Could be more open to exploitation as users can add in malicious code
You need expert knowledge to be able to edit the code
