1.6 Using Lenses Flashcards
1
Q
What is the principal axis?
A
The x axis (label it in the diagram)
2
Q
How to draw a converging lens Ray diagram:
A
- Locate 2F and F on each side of the lens on the principal axis
- Draw the object where it tells you to
- Draw a Ray parallel to the lens from the object and, when it reaches the lens, draw the Ray diagonally down through point F
- Draw a Ray straight through the origin and meet the point from the first Ray
- Where the 2 rays cross is the where the image lies so draw a line from the principal axis to the point and label it image
- Draw arrows on the Rays in the direction they are going!!

Q
How to draw a diverging lens Ray diagram:
A
- Locate 2F and F on each side of the lens on the principal axis
- Draw the object where it tells you to
- Draw a Ray parallel to the lens from the object
- Draw a Ray from the object straight through the origin
- Draw a Ray from the F on the left of the lens and up to the top of the lens in dotted lines
- The point where the 2 rays cross is where the virtual image lies
- Draw arrows on the Rays in the direction they are going
4
Q
What is a Ray diagram?
A
A diagram drawn to find the image that different lenses produce with objects in different positions
5
Q
What are construction rays?
A
Rays drawn on a diagram to determine the nature and position of an image
6
Q
How does a camera form an image?
A
A camera uses a converging lens to form a real image of an object on a film or ccd
7
Q
What is a magnifying glass?
A
A converging lens that is used to form a virtual image of an object
