16 n 17: Glaciers Flashcards
What is a glacier?
a large, longlasting mass of ice formed on land, that moves due to influence of gravity and its own weight.
How does a glacier form?
Accumulation and compaction of snow Packs snow into firn then refreezes to ice
What is a cirque?
Glaciers that erode basins into mountainsides
Valley glacier
Flow into already existing stream valleys; picking up material las they go
Ice caps
Masses of glacier on mountain top
Zone of ablation
Loses ice
Zone of accumulation
Gain of ice
Which way to glaciers flow?
Towards zone of ablation; as has thin layer of meltwater at its base
What happens to MP if at higher pressure?
Lower MP; ice more likely to be liquid.
How to tell which direction glaciers moving?
Glacial abrasion patterns or striations on bedrock
Roche moutonee
Glacial abrasion on one side; sharp an smooth. Then quarrying on one side (bedrock massed removed)
Diff. between water made valley n glacier made
water= v-shaped valley Glacier= u shaped valley (bowls)
How great lakes formed?
Weight of the glacier pushed the crust and mantle down formed a lake. (mantle slowly pushing up)
Unsorted glacial deposit
Unsorted, unstratified sediment deposits by melting ice (usually moraines)
Sorted glacial deposit
sorted stratified sediments deposits
