Legal Description
A description of a parcel of land complete enough to locate and identify the premises
Metes and Bounds
A method of describing land using compass directions, monuments or landmarks, and linear measurements
Call
Term used to refer to the different monuments, courses, and distances that make up a metes-and-bounds description.
Rectangular Survey System
System of land description that applies to most of the land in the US
Applies to all states west of the Mississippi, the five states formed from the Northwest Territory, and most of Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.
Includes 32 base lines and 35 principal meridians. The basic unit of the survey is the township.
Township
An area of land approximately six miles square, containing as nearly as possible 23,040 acres and divided into 36 sections.
Section
An area of land approximately one mile square, containing as nearly as possible 640 acres.
Plat
A map of a subdivision indicating boundaries of individual properties; it also includes details such as lot numbers, blocks, streets, public easements, and monuments.
