Details/Choice of Details
DETAILS are the bits of factual information (about setting, character, action, etc.) that help the reader understand better.
Devices of Sound
anything writers use that improves or emphasizes the sound in a piece of writing.
Diction
the selection of words an author uses to create a specific impact or tone in their writing.
Didactic
the type of literature that is meant to instruct or teach something.
Digression
the act of departing from the main subject in speech or writing to discuss an apparently unrelated topic.
Ellipsis
the narrative device of omitting a portion of the sequence of events, allowing the reader to fill in the narrative gaps.
End-Stopped
a metrical line containing a complete phrase or sentence, or a poetic line ending with punctuation.
Epigram
a short and witty statement, usually written in verse, that conveys a single thought or observation.
Euphemism
a word or phrase used to obliquely describe something unpleasant, impolite, or taboo
Figurative Language
the use of words in a way that deviates from the conventional order and meaning in order to convey a complicated meaning, colorful writing, clarity, or evocative comparison.
Free Verse
poetry that doesn’t use any strict meter or rhyme scheme.
Grotesque
freakish caricatures of people’s appearance and behaviour.
Heroic Couplet
a pair of rhyming lines that is present in a heroic poem or that relays themes of heroism within a larger poem.
Hexameter
a metrical line of verses consisting of six feet
Hyperbole
an extreme exaggeration specifically for literary or rhetorical effect.
