15.7 structure of skeletal muscle Flashcards
what are skeletal muscles?
attached to bones & acts under voluntary, conscious control
describe from the largest to smallest, the muscle structure.
whole muscle -> bundle of muscle fibres -> single muscle fibre -> myofibril -> sacromere
what are myofibrils made up of?
action & myosin
what is the I-band?
non-overlapping region
what is the A-band?
overlapping thin & thick regions
what is the H-zone?
region of thick filaments (myosin) only
what is the Z-line?
separates sarcomeres
what are slow-twitch fibres adapted for?
aerobic respiration & slow contraction
what are 3 other features of slow-twitch fibres?
- large store of myoglobin (bright-red)
- rich supply of blood vessels (for gas exchange)
- lots of mitochondria for ATP production
what are fast-twitch fibres adapted for?
anaerobic respiration & rapid contraction
what are other 3 features of fast-twitch fibres?
- thicker & more myosin filaments
- high conc. of glycogen
- high conc. of enzymes needed in anaerobic respiration
