1.5 Tropical Cyclone Hazards Flashcards
What are the impacts that cause effects on people and the enviorment? (4)
High winds
Intense rainfall
Storm surges
Coastal flododing
Landslides
How does intense rainfall effect people and the enviorment?
Tropical cyclones release trillions of litres of water. The rain gets heavier closer to the eye. The water can lead to flooding and can knock people over. It can cause property damage and injury.
How does storm surges effect people and the enviroment?
This is a large rise in sea level caused by low pressure and high winds. People may drown in the strong current or get injured by the floating debris. They erode beaches and damaged coastal habitats and pollute freshwater environments.
How do landslides effect people and the enviorment?
Heavy rain making hills unstable causing landslides. Damaged road making aid and emergency vehicles hard to get through. Sediment can be deposited in rivers and lakes which can kill fish and wildlife.
How does coastal flooding effect people and the enviorment?
Flooding due to storms strong winds driving large waves onto the shore. Sewage overflow which contaminate water supplies. flooding can damage industrial buildings on the coast - oil or chemical factories can pollute the environment.
What is the saffir simpson scale?
The saffir simpson scale is how tropical cyclone catagories are measured .
How many catagories does the saffir simpson scale have?
5 catagories
Give examples of areas/ places that would be more vulnerable to the impacts of a tropical cyclones. (4)
Flat areas
Coastal areas
Farmers - very vulnerable
Poor people in society
Dense populated areas
Countries with bad technology
Countries with bad hospitals
