1.5 Newton's First law Flashcards
What is the resultant force?
The single overall force that replaces multiple forces acting on a single object
What is Newton’s first law?
A resultant force is needed to make something move
(I.e. force is needed to make something move)
What happens if the resultant force on a stationary object is zero?
The object remains stationary
What happens if the resultant force on a moving object is zero?
It continues moving at the same velocity
If a car is travelling at constant velocity, what forces are acting in the opposite direction to the driving force?
Friction and air resistance
What happens if there’s a non zero resultant force on the object?
Its velocity will change ( it will accelerate in the direction of the force)
When a resultant force acts on an object, what five different things can happen?
- Starts moving
- Stops moving
- Speeds up
- Slows down
- Changes direction
