1.5: Human Structure Flashcards
Organism
Single, complete individual
Organ system
A group of organs with a unique, collective function
How many organ systems does the human body have and what are they?
11: Integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary, digestive, and reproductive
Organ
A structure composed of two or more tissue types that work to carry out a particular function
Tissue
A mass of similar cells that form a discrete region of an organ and perform a certain founction
Cell
Smallest unit of an organism that can carry out basic functions of life
Organelles
Microscopic structures in a cell that out its individual functions
Molecule
One or more atoms which are the smallest particles with unique chemical identities
Reductionism
The theory that a large, complex system such as the human body can be understood by studying its simpler components.
Holism
The theory that there are “emergent” properties of the whole organism that can’t be predicted from the properties of it’s separate parts.
